Company Profile
CODA, Inc.
Company Overview
CODA is a not-for-profit behavioral health agency, and the oldest opioid-addiction treatment agency in Oregon. In the years since our founding in 1969 our services have expanded to include a range of evidence-based alcohol- and drug-treatment programs, both outpatient and residential. We serve adult clients and families in Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties.
The sentence that begins our Mission & Vision statement and which appears in much of our material describes our agency both literally and philosophically:
CODA: “Building health and recovery through compassionate, evidence-based care.”
This means that our mission is to provide patient-centered care delivered by people who listen with respect and who stay with patients all along the road to recovery and into a life of health and stability.
When we say “evidence-based” care, we are promising that the treatment we provide is based on sound science and research, and that we will use the best practices available in behavioral healthcare.
What we offer
CODA’s Opioid Treatment Program matches patient need with the most appropriate FDA-approved medication for opioid use disorder. We have extensive experience with medication assisted treatment and are licensed to prescribed methadone, oral naltrexone, extended-release naltrexone (Vivitrol ®), and buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone ®.) Treatment services include assessment, group and individual therapy, with family involvement as appropriate; DUII, supported employment, case management, care coordination, medication administration. Project Nurture partners with OHSU Family Medicine at Richmond to provide integrated prenatal/postpartum care. CODA offers programming for intensive and maintenance treatment needs and integrated mental health services.
CODA offers outpatient services in Portland, Clackamas, Gresham, Hillsboro and Tigard, where patients meet with counselors, attend groups, and if their health situation, needs and choices call for it, they receive medication to block cravings and help prevent relapse. CODA also works with people who struggle with both mental illness and substance use.
CODA has long provided residential treatment for men and women, including a program in Gresham for women and their young children, and programs for men in Gresham and Tigard.
CODA also offers withdrawal management (detoxification) and alcohol- and substance-free housing for adults with specific needs.

Company History
Our History
CODA is the oldest opioid addiction treatment program in Oregon. The agency was established in 1969 as part of a state effort to provide methadone to clients in need of treatment who could benefit from this medicine. CODA became an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit in 1979.
Between 1986 and 2007, we added transitional housing, outpatient, residential, withdrawal management (detoxification), recovery centers in Gresham and Tigard; Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII) services, and mental health services.
Also during that time we added residential programs serving adults with severe and persistent mental illness and clients under jurisdiction of the Psychiatric Security Review Board.
In 2007, we offered our first Stepping Stones transitional housing for women in recovery being reunited with children who had been in foster care. In 2011-12, the two existing Stepping Stones transitional houses were built in Aloha.
In 2008, CODA was asked to assume oversight and administration of multiple alcohol and drug programs in Washington County, including drug court, community corrections, DUII and outpatient treatment.
Since 1999, CODA has collaborated with Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), Dartmouth College, University of Pittsburgh, University of Washington, Virginia Commonwealth University, Kaiser Permanente, and other institutions on research funded by National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and other foundations and agencies. CODA was one of the original members of the Robert Wood Johnson grant for improvement of clinical services through the Network for Improvement of Addiction Treatment (NIATx). In 2007, the CODA administration created a separate research division within its organization believing that treatment driven by real time data is critical to optimal patient outcomes. CODA Research is one of three recipients of the SAMHSA 2012 Science and Service Award.
Today CODA offers 15 programs in Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas Counties.
